Kang Eun-Jeong
Abstract
Background : Suicide rates in Korea increased markedly in recent decades.

Objectives : The objective of this study was to examine the trends of suicide rates and their epidemiologic characteristics in Korea.

Method : We evaluated the age-standardized mortality rates from suicide death in Korea from 1983~2007, using registered death data obtained from the Korea National Statistical Office.

Results : The number of suicide death was 3,471 in 1983 and 12,174 in 2007. Age-standardized mortality rates from suicide death significantly increased from 9.9 to 20.7 per 100,000. The rate of suicide was higher in men, over 65-years-old, low education and so on.

Conclusions : Suicide rates substantially increased during over 20 years and showed socio economic variations. More intensive intervention efforts to reduce suicide mortality should become a public health priority in Korea.
